The Swahili Coast

Kenya’s Coast features stunning white sand beaches and limestone cliffs, and offers a wide variety of excellent accommodation, from small hotels to large, all-inclusive resorts.

Mombasa, located on the South Eastern part of Kenya undoubtedly boasts one of the best white sandy beaches and coral reefs that Africa has to offer. Coupled with an array of hotels on the beachfront situated along the North and South coasts of the town and its rich history, Mombasa is an ideal place for a beach vacation and a major tourist destination.

It was a very influential port in the 15th century, and has played a significant role in laying the foundations of the nation. Take a tour through Old Town, known for its ancient buildings, extravagant art designs and curio shops that sell antiques and popular Kenyan souvenirs. Be sure to visit Fort Jesus, a monumental piece of architecture built in the 16th century by the Portuguese. The fort is now home to a museum displaying various artifacts from the city’s past. History lovers will also want to see the Gedi Ruins, which date back as far as the 11th century.

Moving north up the coast, Malindi, Watamu and Lamu all offer entirely unique experiences. Watamu is a very relaxed town perfect for tranquil days exploring the nearby marine park or simply relaxing by the pool or ocean. Known for being a popular Italian tourist destination, Malindi offers stunning beaches and a continuation of protected marine areas that stretch north from Mombasa. Lamu, located in northern Kenya, is a stunning area with many beautiful resorts and accommodation options. The town itself is located on an island and boasts fascinating architecture and a complete lack of cars, as they are too large to fit through the narrow alleyways.

All along the Kenyan Coast, you can enjoy activities like deep-sea fishing, windsurfing, diving, dolphin watching, dhow cruises, golfing and shopping in the areas various marketplaces.
